Have you and your dog considered becoming a therapy dog team? Whether your goal is to visit hospitals, nursing homes, schools, libraries, or other community organizations, this class is designed to prepare you for success. Our 6-week Therapy Dog Test Prep Class focuses on the skills, handling techniques, and knowledge needed to confidently complete a therapy dog evaluation. Throughout the course, teams will practice the exercises commonly found on major therapy dog certification tests while learning how to work as a calm, confident, and reliable team in real-world environments. Unlike a basic obedience class, this course emphasizes the expectations of therapy dog work, proper handler etiquette, and the subtle details evaluators look for during testing. We will also discuss the differences between several national therapy dog organizations, their testing requirements, membership policies, insurance coverage, and volunteer opportunities so you can choose the organization that best fits your goals. Individual therapy organizations make the final determination regarding certification and registration. Prerequisites Dogs must have completed Beginner Obedience before enrolling. Intermediate Obedience is strongly recommended, as dogs should already have reliable loose leash walking, stays, recalls, and the ability to work around distractions. Dogs should be friendly, non-reactive toward people and other dogs, and comfortable being handled by unfamiliar people.
