Frequently asked questions
Basic commands would include sit, down, heel, recall, place and would include a reasonable amount of distance, distraction, and duration with behaviors.
All training is started and rooted in positive reinforcement. We do follow science and use all four quadrants to train. We do train a lot of different dogs and disciplines so we do use tools depending on the dog. We will follow owners wishes on training but will always discuss better options if there is one and discuss pros and cons. We are well trained on the use of prong collars and e-collars.
Puppies don't listen for a variety of reasons and none of them are personal. Most of the time puppies are not listening because they just don't understand what you are trying to communicate to them. Clear boundaries and communication is key to having a good relationship with your puppy. Make sure you are being clear, consistent, and fair.
Training can take anywhere from a few months to a few years depending on what the owners goals are. Obviously higher level training takes a lot longer than basic training. Training of therapy dogs and service dogs can take a year or two to fully train then continued training to keep up behaviors. Behavior modification really depends on the level of reactivity/aggression and what the goals of the owner are. There is no one size fits all when it comes to training.
Puppy training should start as soon as you get your puppy. Puppies can start training as early as 3 weeks old when they open their eyes. Puppies should be at least 8 weeks old to start classes.
There can be multiple reasons dogs might lunge at other dogs on walks. Depending how the dog reacts in other situations gives us more information to figure out the reasons. If the dog is normally friendly with other dogs but only reacts on leash it could be barrier reactivity, frustration, or over stimulation. You do not have to live with your dog lunging while on walks or keeping your dog inside because of this. We can help assess your dog and create a training plan to help with relaxed walks.
There are multiple types of aggression and it takes an experienced trainer to properly assess the dog. We always prioritize safety when working with aggressive dogs. Most aggressive dogs can show significant improvement with training. It is important to seek out a trainer with specific experience working with aggressive dogs.
The cost of dog training can depend on the goals of the owner. Group classes cost around $250 for 8 weeks. Private lessons for obedience cost around $100/hour.
